There Is No Antimemetics Division (15:33)
IMDb; TV Tropes; YouTube

This is supposed to be a science fiction/neo-noir short film, but I thought it more fitting to file it under “weird/surreal” short films. I guess it’s based on or inspired by a novel of the same name, which I haven’t read (and which also inspired a short web series, which I haven’t seen). I think the short film is fairly interesting and high-concept, and kind of keeps you wondering just what is really going on.

A woman named Marion Wheeler is called in for a meeting with her boss, Brent, the head of the SCP Foundation. The foundation has several divisions with intriguing names, so I think it would be fun to learn more about all the different things the foundation actually does. Wheeler claims to be the chief of the antimemetic division, but Brent says there is no such division in the foundation. His assistant, Clay, points a gun at Wheeler, as he and Brent believe she is a spy, since there is apparently no record of her existence. She explains to Brent that an antimemetic entity has eaten his memories of her and of her division (among other things).

I don’t want to reveal any more of the plot, but the whole time I couldn’t help wondering whether or not Wheeler was lying about everything. (I won’t say if she was or not.) I really liked the film’s concept, and thought it was kind of a head trip, but ultimately it’s too short to do the concept full justice, which makes me think I should probably read the novel (but I don’t suppose I’ll ever get around to it). Still, I’m glad to have seen the short, at least.
