Disfigura (15:37)

The film is in black & white, and has a retro 1950s vibe. It begins with a Rod Serling-esque host (played by Doug Jones) telling us about a newlywed couple, Anya and George Bowens. Then we see Anya going about her day as a housewife, waiting for George to return from work. When he does, he becomes progressively jerkish. He cancels their plans to go out dancing, and demands Anya start taking the diet pills his company makes, while also forbidding her to exercise. At one point, he says he might have to send her to “disfigura”. When she asks what that is, he gets secretive. Later, someone from work shows up to inform George that “they” have escaped from Disfigura, and they know where George lives. And of course, they eventually show up, and George is forced to explain things to Anya.
That’s all I want to reveal of the plot, though I liked how it ended. I do think the film was somewhat amusing, in a slightly tongue-in-cheek way, but not quite enough to make me think of it as a comedy. I mostly see it as a sincere effort to make a Twilight Zone-style horror story/morality play. And I think it succeeds well enough. I didn’t think it was as high-quality as the best Twilight Zone episodes, but it’s certainly better than the worst episodes. (And really, does that show have any really bad episodes? I don’t know, I haven’t seen the whole series, and I don’t remember every episode I have seen.) Anyway… I really enjoyed the style of the film, even if I didn’t love the film. It’s definitely a good short, especially if you’re a fan of old TV shows of this type.
