This is the eighth direct-to-video movie in the "Scooby-Doo" franchise. It came out in 2005, but I didn't see it until 2026. For much of the movie, I wasn't sure how much I liked it or how highly I'd rate it, but I was thinking probably one smiley. By the end, I was thinking maybe even two smileys, but I decided to go just a bit lower than that. I'm still not sure it doesn't deserve a full two, but whatever, it's not that important. The important thing is that I did basically like the movie.
It's set in the Hawaiian town of Hanahuna, where there's supposed to be a surfing contest in a few days. The reigning champ is a local guy named Manu Tuiama (voiced by Mario Lopez). Until this year, the contest has only been open to locals, but the new mayor, Molly Quinn (Teri Garr), has opened it to anyone who wants to enter. This apparently angers a spirit called Wiki-Tiki, who sends a bunch of small tiki demons to wreak havoc in Hanahuna, and they kidnap Manu's girlfriend, Snookie (Tia Carrere). Meanwhile, the Mystery Inc. gang have come to Hanahuna on an all-expenses paid trip, for Daphne to meet a guy named Jared Moon (Adam West), a representative of the company that's sponsoring the gang's trip, because she had designed some clothes for the company. They're surprised to find a ton of people are leaving Hanahuna, scared off by the tikis' attack. Naturally, the gang set out to solve the mystery behind Wiki-Tiki.
The mayor is desperate to calm people down, because she doesn't want the town to get bad PR. There's also a realtor named Ruben Laluna (Tom Kenny), who is worried no one will want to buy any of his properties. I gotta say, it didn't seem to me like there were any solid suspects for who might be behind what's going on, as most people only stood to suffer from the panic. Nevertheless, I guessed who was behind it relatively early on, and I turned out to be right. I won't spoil who that was or what their motivation was, but I did think that was probably the weakest aspect of the movie. And overall, I didn't think it was one of the best Scooby-Doo movies, but I also didn't think it was one of the worst. It was reasonably entertaining, though I couldn't help wondering how native Hawaiians would view it. I honestly have no idea about that, but I'm not too worried about it. Anyway, the surfing was pretty cool (Daphne was especially good at it, though Shaggy and Scooby also did some surfing together). The various elements of the scheme to scare people away were also fairly cool. And I would say that Daphne was the MVP of the movie, in various ways, which was nice. And I guess that's all I wanna say.
